Five Tips for Keeping Your Dog Healthy this Winter

Winter is the time of year when it’s easy to hole up in your house to escape the cold. Here are five tips collected from our training staff to keep your dog healthy all winter long:

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

Cold does not mean your dog is any less thirsty! Hydration is equally important in winter as it is in Summer, so make sure an adequate water supply is available to your pet. Don’t forget to check for iced-over water pans or bowls!

2. Watch for cold paws!

Snow, ice and salt can be very hard on a dog’s paws. Check your pet’s paws often for damaged pads. If you spend a lot of time outside with your pet, it may be time to invest in some cold-weather booties. We love these ones. If you notice any issues with your pet’s paws, try this coconut oil hack

3. Don’t forget a sweater.

Just like us, dogs can get chilled to the bone. Dogs with shorter coats or no under coats may need a sweater to brave the winter cold. Your dog could be stylin’ in this Barbour jacket

4. That extra serving may be required.

Active dogs may require higher calorie intake since they burn more when keeping their bodies warm outside. Look for a higher fat and protein diet.

5. Brave the cold and get some exercise!

Exercise is just as important in the Winter as it is in the Summer months - just make sure everyone is properly dressed for those brutal temps!
